Proper Gear
Invest in quality hiking boots, moisture-wicking clothing, and a reliable backpack. Layer clothing for changing weather conditions, and always carry rain protection.
Navigation
Always carry a map and compass and know how to use them. Don't rely solely on electronic devices. Download offline maps before your hike, and share your route with someone.
Leave No Trace
Pack out all trash, stay on designated trails, respect wildlife, and leave natural objects as you found them. Minimize campfire impacts and respect fellow hikers.
Safety First
Research trail conditions and weather forecasts before departing. Carry a first aid kit, emergency shelter, and extra food and water. Learn basic wilderness first aid.
Acclimatization
For high-altitude hikes, allow time for proper acclimatization. Ascend slowly, stay hydrated, and be aware of altitude sickness symptoms. Consider medication if necessary.
Training
Prepare physically for challenging hikes with cardio and strength training. Practice hiking with a loaded backpack, and break in your boots before a major trek.
